Dr. Dirk Hofäcker

Dirk Hofäcker, born in Witten, Germany (1974), studied sociology and political economics at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, where he took his MA in 2002 with a thesis on "Types of Family Policies in Europe: Convergence or Divergence?". During his years of study, he spent a research term in 1997 at the State University of St. Petersburg, Russia, financially supported by a TEMPUS/TACIS scholarship. From 1998 to 2000, he worked as an assistant in the research project "Wohlfahrtsstaatliche Maßnahmen und Einstellungen der Bürger" / WME (Welfare State Policies and Public Attitudes), led by Prof. H.-J. Andreß at Bielefeld University. Before joining the Chair of Sociology I in late 2002, he worked as a Junior Research Executive at the market and opinion research institute IPSOS Deutschland, Hamburg. From 2002 to 2006, Dirk worked as a researcher within the project "Globalife - Life Courses in the Globalization Process", funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Within this project, he specialized in the analysis of large-scale socio-structural and institutional data to investigate in which different ways national welfare states 'filter' the influences of globalization. His dissertation, finished in September 2008, focused on the description and explanation of retirement processes under globalization in an international perspective. Since 2006, Dirk is both a researcher at the Institute for Family Research at Bamberg University (ifb) and Coordinator of the Research Network "TransEurope - Transnationalisation and Changing Life Course Inequality in Europe", funded by the European Science Foundation. Dirk has spent research visits at Statistics Denmark (Aarhus, DK), the Centre d'Etudes de Populations, de Pauvreté et de Politiques Socio-Economiques / International Network for Studies in Technology, Environment, Alternatives, Development (CEPS, Differdange, Luxembourg), Middlesex University Business School (London, UK) as well as the Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research in Nuremberg (Germany). Dirk's major research interests include the comparative analyses of welfare states, their effects on social structure and labor markets and quantitative multivariate methods of social science data analysis.
